STYLE:  Late Victorian
NUMBER OF STORIES:  Three stories
FOUNDATION:  Rubblestone/Fieldstone
EXTERIOR WALL FABRIC:            Original siding was clapboard, which was covered
                                                             over in the 1950’s with mineral siding.  The house
                                                             was resided in 2003 with narrow clapboard and
                                                             scalloped vinyl siding.
FENESTRATION:  32/1 Wood sash.  Original upper sash Queen Ann Style windows
ROOF/CHIMNEYS:  Original Slate Roof/Three Chimneys
Additional Architectural Description:
            The period of the house is Late Victorian.  The Victorian period was coming to a
            close and the high ornamentation of earlier homes of the same style was much
            less common.
            The house consists of 3 stories with a 1 story addition added at the back of the
            house in 1972.  The house has 3 gables.  The front door is a large Dutch door.
            The upper sash of the windows combines stained glass and clear glass mullions. 
            There are two French doors in the dining room.  There is a wrap-around porch on
            the front of the house that continues around 1/3 of the left side of the house. 
            There is a small porch on the second floor as well.
The surrounding environment is suburban/residential.  A two car garage and storage building are located on the western side of the property.  The land is approximately 2/3 of an acre.
Built by Christine Terhune Herrick circa 1890.  Mrs. Herrick called her home Outlook.  Mrs. Herrick lived there for thirteen years.
Christine Terhune Herrick (1859-1944) was from a family of prolific writers.
She was the daughter of the writers Edward Payson Terhune and Mary Hawes Terhune and the sister of Albert Payson Terhune.  The latter wrote more than ninety books using the pen name “Marion Harland.”  Mrs. Herrick wrote thirty books on domestic topics ranging from childcare to cooking and budgeting.  She also wrote magazine articles and co-authored books with her mother.  She is buried in the cemetery of Pompton Reformed Church.

  • Eldau Realty bought the property in 1963 and subdivided the original 3-4 acres leaving the house with 2/3 of an acre.  At this time, due to the subdivision the address of the house changed from 304 Pompton Ave. to 233 Bartholf Ave.
