The Registrar of Vital Statistics records all births, deaths, marriages and civil unions occurring within the Borough of Pompton Lakes.
certified copies of the above documents may be obtained by including the application, a copy of the requestor's valid identification, payment of the appropriate fee and proof of relationship to the individual listed on the vital record. Relationship must comply with Executive Order #18.
a State or local Registrar may issue a certified copy of a vital record only to persons who establish themselves as the subject of the vital record, the subject's parent, legal guardian or legal representative, spouse, child, grandchild or sibling, if of legal age, to a State or Federal Agency for official purposes, pursuant to court order.
to file a marriage/civil union application, one of the applicants must be a resident of Pompton Lakes. If both parties are not residents of New Jersey, the license must be obtained from the Registrar of the municipality where the ceremony is to be performed and is only good for use in that municipality.
there is a seventy-two (72) hour waiting period between the time of the application and the time the license can be issued. Once the license is issued it must be used within thirty (30) days. An appointment is necessary; to schedule an appointment contact the Registrar well in advance of the ceremony.
the Mayor performs wedding/civil unions for residents only for an administrative fee of $100.00.
Required documents when applying for a marriage license:
1. Proof of identity by presenting a driver’s license, passport or state/federal ID
2. Proof of residency
3. Social security card or social security number (for US citizens) Social Security number is required by law for U.S. Citizens and will be kept confidential.
4. A witness, 18 years of age or older
5. $28 application fee
